After Rockstar Games had at long last acknowledged GTA 6 - or whatever it will be called - and stated that it’s well along in development, a new chapter in the already-long pre-release history of this highly anticipated title opened. How could it have possibly had a long history already? Simple - GTA 5 became so popular so quickly, that fans have been clamoring for news of a sequel practically since it launched.

For the longest time, GTA 6 ’leaks’ were nothing but clickbait hoaxes - quick and easy ways to kick up some website traffic. As the years marched on and GTA 5 became all the more successful thanks to Online, it became more and more clear that another game in the series is a ways away. It was only relatively recently that any kind of legitimate-looking reports from reputable sources started popping up. One specific leak, posted on 4Chan - wherever else, right? - has rocketed back into the fandom’s spotlight for two specific reasons. First of all, it was nearly the only leak to predict that the game would be officially confirmed in 2022; this happened. It also predicted the remasters of the 3D era games, which would precede it; this also happened. Secondly, it got scrubbed. Leaks, especially 4Chan ones, don’t just disappear willy-nilly, and the prevalent assumption is that it was wiped off the message boards precisely because of its accuracy. This does sound a bit like it is treading on conspiracy theory ground, but the fact that it got at least two things right remains. Interestingly, the leak was one of the those that were harder to believe. Speaking of two separate timelines and story threads, set in the 70’s and 80’s respectively where players would control a father and their son as playable protagonists, set in both Liberty City and Vice City. The leak also noted spectacular weather effects, which seemingly fit the profile for some job listings that Rockstar Games have posted in the time since. It would be quite the twist in the long story of GTA 6 leaks if this older one turns out to have been right here in front of us all this time, but this isn’t enough evidence to declare as much quite yet - there are still some highly reputable sources with conflicting information. However, now that Rockstar Games has formally acknowledged GTA 6, we might be seeing more news soon. Or Soon™.
