Although a Square Enix acquisition would certainly fit in with what’s happening lately with Microsoft buying Activision-Blizzard and Sony countering with a Bungie buyout, Square Enix probably isn’t going to go under PlayStation Studios’ massive umbrella anytime soon. But, the prominent Japanese gaming publishers should play a major role in Sony’s upcoming State of Play event.
For the past several weeks, several insiders and sources have “confirmed” that Sony is just waiting for the perfect timing to announce its latest showcase in light of the recent events concerning Russia and Ukraine. According to an official blog post, the upcoming Sony broadcast will offer “new reveals and eye-catching updates for PS5 and PS4 articles.” Specifically, Sony singled out the company’s “beloved Japanese publishers”. This all but confirms that we’ll hear more about Square Enix’s massive slate of upcoming games, including Forspoken, Final Fantasy XVI, Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2, and the Chrono Cross remaster, among others. Of course, Sony did add that the event will include “few updates from other developers located around the globe”. We might just see more of Gotham Knights and Hogwarts Legacy tomorrow. The upcoming 20-minute State of Play show will kick off at 14:00 PT / 17:00 ET / 22:00 GMT and will be available to watch on YouTube and Twitch. In the meantime, feel free to spend the next 24 hours speculating about what kind of games the show will contain. Although it’s not from a Japanese publisher, God of War Ragnarok is an ideal fit as the highly anticipated sequel has been rumored to launch either in June or September. We’re also almost 100% sure that Ghostwire Tokyo will be there ahead of its March 25 release. While we’re not the topic of guessing, why not be bold and hope for a Resident Evil 4 Remake reveal? Capcom certainly fits the bill as a Japanese publisher and we’ve known for a while that Capcom is sitting on a handful of upcoming games, including Street Fighter VI. Either way, it doesn’t look like Sony is going to announce Project Spartacus tomorrow but recent signs point to this happening sooner rather than later.
