Netflix confirmed at its Geeked Week presentation that the adaptation of the popular comic book series by Neil Gaiman from the 90s is finally headed to the still-leading streaming platform on August 5. To help celebrate this momentous occasion, Netflix also dropped an epic full-length trailer for The Sandman. Netflix’s The Sandman boasts a star-studded cast that includes the likes of Game of Thrones alumni and fan-favorites, Charles Dance and Gwendoline Christie, as well as Tom Sturridge, Boyd Holbrook, David Thewlis, and Jenna Coleman. In addition to the ensemble cast, The Sandman also features the series’ creator, Neil Gaiman, as a producer alongside the showrunner of Apple TV+’s Foundation, David S. Goyer, with Wonder Woman writer, Allan Heinberg, serving as the showrunner. If you’re not that familiar with The Sandman, we don’t blame you. Even if the comic books have attracted the interest of many studios over the years, the series arguably peaked back in the 90s. It’s also often overshadowed by other more popular DC Comics properties, as well as that of its competition over at Marvel. Having said that, Gaiman’s comic series tells the story of Dream, who is one of seven deity-like beings more powerful than even the gods, known as the Endless. Dream, who is also known by other names such as the show’s title, The Sandman, escapes captivity after nearly a century and ventures out to rebuild his now-decrepit kingdom. Meanwhile, as per the show’s official synopsis, The Sandman is a “rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic - and human - mistakes he’s made during his vast existence.” Netflix’s take on Gaiman’s epic tale will cover Preludes & Nocturnes and The Doll’s House in its first 11 episodes. The rest are still up in the air, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Netflix renews The Sandman if it draws in viewers.
